10 Energy Saving Tips You Can Use Today!

Making simple changes can boost your home’s value. To make your home more energy efficient:

1. Lower the thermostat on your water heater. Check your water heater for the optimal temperature range setting for maximum efficiency.

2. Check for air leaking around doors.

3. Close the air vents in rooms not in use.

4. Keep heat producers far from your thermostat in summer.

5. Clean your furnace and air conditioner filters. It is recommended to change the air filters every 4-6 weeks. If you can't remember the last time they were changed, there's a good chance it's time!

6. Operate large appliances during low-use periods in summer. In Texas, evenings are best.

7. Request an energy audit.

8. Replace deficient insulation and inefficient appliances. It's amazing how much you can save by just replacing weather stripping around doors and windows.

9. Buy fluorescent or LED light bulbs. New styles of LED bulbs offer warm light, very similar to traditional bulbs, but at a fraction of their energy use and operating cost!

10. Look into EEM Mortgages (for benefits when purchasing a home that is energy efficient or can be made efficient by incorporating energy-saving improvements; for more info, contact the US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development).
